Adobe Express is built around Firefly. If you want quick social graphics, flyers and posters without generative AI in the tool, here are the alternatives worth using in 2026.
Adobe Express is Adobe's answer to Canva. It's quick, it has templates, and it costs $9.99 a month for Premium, with a free plan below that (Adobe's pricing).
It's also built around generative AI. Firefly generation sits in the free plan, and Premium is largely sold on generative credits.
Some people don't care. Others, particularly illustrators, photographers and small businesses whose customers care how things are made, would rather use a tool with no generation in it at all. This post is for them.
There's a difference between:
The tools below don't generate content. A few have smart features like background removal, which I mention where relevant.
Free, in the browser, and it opens PSD files. It's a Photoshop-style editor, so it's better for editing images than for quick templated layouts. Premium is $5 a month.
Free desktop apps: GIMP for photos, Inkscape for vector graphics. Both are powerful. Neither has templates, so they're slower for a quick social post.
One-time $12.99 on iPad, and the company has publicly pledged not to add generative AI to its apps (procreate.com/ai). Best if you draw.
I've been building Bitgrain as a browser design studio with no generative AI in it. No prompts, no diffusion models, no neural networks. It's the closest of these to Express in how you use it:
It costs nothing to start. The free tier has every feature and unlimited exports at web resolution with a small watermark. Pro is $6.99 a month, or $129 once for ten years.
What it doesn't have: a stock photo library, team collaboration, or scheduling to social platforms.
Look for:
If a tool has none of these, it's very likely not generating anything.
Customers are getting better at spotting generated images, and some react badly to them. A flyer that looks printed, with a real photo of your shop or product, reads as more trustworthy than a polished generated scene. That's an easy advantage to keep.
