Design From Claude: How to Use Bitgrain's MCP Connector

Bitgrain has an MCP server, so AI assistants like Claude can open templates, edit layers and render dithered or halftoned images for you. Here's how it works and what to use it for.

Bitgrain itself doesn't contain any generative AI. Every effect is a classical algorithm. But that doesn't stop you from driving Bitgrain from an AI assistant.

Bitgrain runs an MCP server (Model Context Protocol). That lets assistants like Claude use Bitgrain as a tool: open a template, change the text, swap a photo, apply a halftone and render the result.

The assistant doesn't generate the image. It operates the same deterministic tools you'd use by hand.

What is MCP?

MCP is an open protocol that lets AI assistants connect to external tools and data. Instead of describing how to do something, the assistant calls the tool directly.

For design, that means you can say "make me a gig poster from this photo with a two-colour riso look" and the assistant actually builds it in Bitgrain.

Connecting Bitgrain

Add Bitgrain as a custom connector in an MCP-compatible client using this URL:

https://api.bitgrain.app/mcp

Sign in with your Bitgrain account when prompted.

What the assistant can do

Bitgrain's MCP tools cover two areas.

The darkroom (single images)

The studio (layered documents)

Good things to use it for

Why templates first

The Bitgrain MCP nudges assistants to start from designer-built templates instead of assembling layouts from scratch. That's deliberate. A human-designed grid with real type contrast looks better than rows of boxes an assistant put together. The assistant rewrites the content; the layout keeps its craft.

A note on plans

Browsing templates and building documents works on any account. Rendering finished images through the connector needs a paid plan. If a render is refused, the assistant will tell you and show your options.

Final thoughts

The nice part of this setup is the separation. The assistant handles the busywork (copy, resizing, repeating a design across ten formats). Bitgrain handles the image, with algorithms you can predict and control.

Connect https://api.bitgrain.app/mcp in your assistant and ask it to make you a poster. Then open it in Bitgrain and finish it by hand.
