Saving and Exporting
When your art is ready, you have several ways to save it and share it.
Exporting
Click the Export button on the right side of the toolbar.
- PNG: This is a standard image file. You can choose to export it at 1x, 2x, or 4x the original size. You can also reduce it to a fixed palette, anywhere from 2 to 256 colors, for that "printed on the right machine" feel.
- HDR PNG: A true high dynamic range still, using BT.2020 color and PQ tone, with a peak brightness you can set. Great for displays that can show real HDR.
- SVG: This is a vector file. It is made of math instead of pixels, which means you can make it as big as a building and it will never look blurry. In ASCII mode it exports as real crisp text characters, ready for a pen plotter.
- WEBP: A modern compressed format, with an optional lossless mode.
- JPEG: A compressed photo with a quality slider.
- Riso ZIP: For risograph printing, Bitgrain separates your image into one printable layer per ink and packs them into a zip alongside a composite preview.
- Transparent Background: You can toggle this on if you want to remove the background color from your image. This is great for placing your dithered art on top of other designs.
If you animate a still, it exports as MP4, WebM, GIF, animated SVG, or Lottie.
On the free plan, exports carry a small watermark and are capped at 1500px on the long edge. On a paid plan the watermark comes off and you can export all the way up to 16384px.
Presets
If you create a look you love, you can save it.
- Save Preset: Open the Presets menu and give your current settings a name. It will be saved in your browser so you can use it on different photos later.
- Share Preset: Clicking this will copy a special link to your clipboard. If you send this link to a friend, they can open it to see their own photos with your exact settings.
