Advanced Tips and Tricks

Once you are comfortable with the basics, these advanced techniques will help you push your designs further.

Layer Masking

While Bitgrain doesn't have a traditional masking tool, you can achieve similar effects by using Shapes with the Destination-In blend mode. This will "clip" any layer below it to the shape of the top layer.

Custom Texture Overlays

You can create your own grainy textures by uploading a high-noise image and setting its blend mode to Overlay or Soft Light. Adjust the opacity to fine-tune the intensity. This is a great way to add a "scanned paper" or "film grain" feel to your digital work.

Responsive Layouts

The Studio uses a flexible coordinate system. If you change the canvas size, you can use the Alignment tools to quickly reposition your layers.

High-Resolution Printing

If you are designing for print, we recommend working at a larger canvas size (e.g., 2000x2000px) and exporting at 2x or 4x. This ensures that the dithering patterns remain sharp and crisp even when printed on large formats.

Animation and Presenting

The Studio is not only for still designs. You can keyframe almost any property of a layer, its position, size, rotation, opacity, colors, effects, and even the drawing progress of a vector path. Pick an easing like ease in and out or spring to control the feel of the motion. Once a page is animated, you can play it in Presentation mode for a live slideshow, or export the whole thing as MP4, WebM, GIF, animated SVG, or Lottie.
