Supported files

Every file type Bitgrain can open and every format it can export, workspace by workspace: standard images, iPhone HEIC, TIFF, around 27 camera RAW formats, video and audio for the video editor, fonts, and project files.

All decoding happens in your browser. A HEIC, TIFF or RAW file is converted on your own device and is never uploaded to be processed.

Images in the image editor

The image editor accepts the widest range of files. Drop a file on the start screen, click to browse, or use the plus button at the top left once an image is open.

Standard formats

HEIC and HEIF

Photos from iPhones and many Android phones (.heic, .heif) are converted to JPEG in your browser before editing. A small panel reads "Converting HEIC image" while it works, which usually takes a second or two.

TIFF

.tif and .tiff files are decoded in the browser and converted to JPEG. A panel reads "Converting TIFF image" while it works.

Camera RAW

Bitgrain develops camera RAW files in the browser using the camera's own white balance, then hands the result to the editor as a high-quality JPEG. A panel reads "Converting RAW image" while it works. The first RAW file you open downloads the decoder, so it takes a little longer than the rest.

DNG files are first read with a fast TIFF reader that picks the largest usable preview. If that does not work, the full RAW decoder takes over.

Note: Very new camera models sometimes use a RAW variant the decoder does not know yet. If a RAW file will not open, export a JPEG or TIFF from your camera software and open that instead. See troubleshooting.

Size on the way in

To keep the editor fast and within browser memory, any image longer than 8192 pixels on its long edge is scaled down to exactly 8192 pixels and saved as a high-quality JPEG. The shape never changes. GIF and SVG files skip this step. Images at or under 8192 pixels are used as they are.

That is far more detail than the effects need. The look is computed on a smaller working grid, set by the resolution slider, and then scaled back up on export. Adjustments explains why.

Batch processing

Batch processing takes PNG, JPG, WebP and HEIC files, up to 50 at a time.

Images in the studio

To add a picture to a studio design, you can:

The studio does not open camera RAW or TIFF files directly. Open them in the image editor first, export a PNG or JPEG, and add that to your design. See images and uploads.

Media in the video editor

The video editor takes video, audio and still images. Import them into the media panel, then place them on the timeline.

Video.mp4, .webm, .mov, .m4v, .mkv
Audio.mp3, .wav, .m4a, .ogg, .aac, .flac
Image.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif, .webp, .svg, .avif

The file also has to be something your browser can decode. A .mov or .mkv recorded with an unusual codec may import without picture or sound. If that happens, convert it to an H.264 .mp4 first.

Imported media is stored in your browser on the device you imported it on, on every plan. It is never uploaded. See accounts and saving.

Uploaded fonts stay in your browser. Check that your font's licence allows embedding before you use it in work you share. The built-in font library and pairings are covered in text and typography.
