Accounts and saving

How to sign in to Bitgrain with Google or email, where your editor, studio and video projects are stored (this device or your account), how to back up with .btg files, and what you can do from the account page, including deleting your account.

Do you need an account?

You can use the image editor without one. An account is needed for the studio and the video editor, for buying or trialling Pro, and for anything that should follow you between devices, such as custom presets. A free account costs nothing and unlocks every tool. See plans and pricing for what each level includes.

Signing in

Open the sign-in page at /sign-in, or just open the studio or the video editor and Bitgrain will send you there. There are two ways in.

With Google

Click continue with google and pick your Google account. Bitgrain receives your name, email address and profile picture from Google, and nothing else. It never sees your Google password.

With email and a password

  1. Click create an account at the bottom of the form to switch to sign up.
  2. Enter your full name, email and a password, then click create account.
  3. Next time, use the same email and password on the sign in side.

Password rules:

RuleDetail
LengthAt least 8 characters and at most 72
Breach checkPasswords that appear in known public data breaches are refused. Only a short fragment of a scrambled version of your password is used for this check, never the password itself.
NameYour name needs at least 2 characters

A few things that can stop you:

Note: There is no self-service password reset yet. If you are locked out of an email account, write to the address on the contact page from that email address and it will be sorted out by hand.

Where you land

After signing in you go to the hub, unless a page sent you to sign in, in which case you go straight back to it. You stay signed in on that browser until you sign out.

Signing out

Use sign out at the top right of the hub, or Sign out on the account page. Signing out does not delete anything saved on the device.

Where your projects are saved

Each workspace saves differently. The key question is whether a project lives only in this browser or also in your account.

WorkspaceWhat is savedFree accountPro
Image editorThe last image you openedThis browserThis browser
StudioEvery project, autosavedThis browserYour account (and this browser as a fallback)
Video editorEvery project, autosavedThis browserYour account (and this browser as a fallback)
Video media filesThe video, audio, images and fonts you importThis browserThis browser

The image editor

The editor remembers the last image you opened, in your browser's storage, so it is still on screen when you return. It does not keep your effect settings or a list of past images. To keep a look, save a .btg file (see below) or save it as a preset.

The studio and the video editor

Both autosave while you work, about a second after you stop making changes. You never press save. See saving and autosave for how this looks in the studio.

What cloud sync stores for video

For video projects, cloud sync saves the edit itself: tracks, clips, text, effects and settings. The media you imported (video, audio, images and uploaded fonts) always stays in the browser you imported it in, on every plan. If you open a synced video project on another device, the timeline is there but you need to import the footage again on that device.

For studio projects, the whole project is saved to your account, including the images you placed in it.

Moving from free to Pro

Once you are on Pro (bought or trial), Bitgrain copies the projects saved on this device into your account. This happens once per browser session, when the app first loads your account details, so if you upgraded partway through a session, close the tab and open Bitgrain again to trigger it. Each project is removed from local storage only after the copy has been confirmed. Do this on each device that has projects you want to keep.

When Pro or a trial ends

Projects already in your account stay there and keep opening. New projects you create on the free plan are saved on the device again.

Things that erase local projects

Anything that clears your browser's site data for Bitgrain removes projects stored on the device. That includes clearing browsing data or cookies for the site, some browser privacy or cleanup extensions, and closing a private or incognito window. If you work on the free plan, keep .btg backups of anything important.

Backing up with .btg files

A .btg file is Bitgrain's own project file. It is the simplest way to back up your work, move it to another computer or share it with someone. Saving and opening .btg files is free on every plan.

WorkspaceSave a .btgOpen a .btg
Image editorsave as .BTG in the export menuThe upload button with the Load .BTG project tooltip, at the top left of the editor
StudioFile then Save as .btg…, or Save as .BTG in the export panelFile then Open .btg file…, or Or open a saved .btg project file on the studio home

What a .btg holds:

The video editor does not save .btg files. Its projects live in the browser (and your account on Pro).

Tip: Because a .btg embeds your images and fonts, it can be large for image-heavy projects. Keep it somewhere you back up anyway, like a cloud drive folder.

  1. Click Delete Account.
  2. Click Confirm Delete to go ahead, or Cancel to back out.

What happens:

Note: Deleting an account with an active Pro licence ends the licence. It cannot be moved to a new account afterwards. Save .btg copies of any cloud projects you want to keep before you delete.
